Vaya Con Dios
Its been a couple of weeks since we returned from Mexico. Overall I have to say it was a great experience and I could definitely see myself living their in the near future. The people were nice and the pace of life is something that we all talk about when we “retire.” My viewpoint has always been..why wait?! Go and Do while you can still appreciate it.
The only negatives dealt mostly...

San Jose del Cabo
So finally we are at our last stop. When we planned this trip I told Gail that I wanted our last location to be relaxing. So we have a condo on the beach with a pool. Since this is the off-season we practically have the condo complex to ourselves. No schedule, no bus rides, no excursions…just the pool and the beach and good food. :)
Most people are familiar with Cabo San Lucas but not with...

Donde esta la playa?
We rented a car from the property manager because we were planning to go check out the town of La Ventana which is about 25 mins south of La Paz. Armed with 2 maps you wouldn’t think it would be that difficult. We hopped in the car, a Volkswagen, which was also a stick shift. I drive stick but hadn’t done it in several…make that about 5 years. Added to that was my...

The Perfect Storm
Gail: Why are you so tired?
Me: It's hot.
Gail: I am in the same heat.
Me: I'm hungry.
Gail: I'm hungry too.
Me: Riding those bikes took it out of me.
Gail: I was right next to you and I'm not complaining.
Me: Well I got up 2 hours before you did..it's a combination..it's a Perfect Storm - 100 degree heat, plus I had Special K for breakfast about 6 hours ago plus that bike seat was really hard. I'm done!

The Wheels on the Bus...
After spending so much time using the very confusing and somewhat disorganized public transportation system here in Mexico and mentally reorganizing it to make it better, I have begun to think about how much or how little I use it back in DC. DC which has a great public transportation with a metro station and a bus stop right down the street from my house. I own a car so I don’t “have...
1 cliff, 1 ocean, 2 flaming torches and 1 Mexican
We decided to end the day by watching the sunset down on the beach. (pics to follow) Gail had read that there was a cliff diving performance which usually occurred not to far from where we were so we staying to see if there would be a show. Not long after sunset a man stood on top of a gazebo out on a rocky outcropping. Cliff Diver!! So we watched and soon another man walked up and gave him two...

The Golden Zone
With alot of prodding by me, I was able to convince Gail that we should get up earlier and get outside before the thermometer tipped 90 degrees. So today we headed out bright and somewhat early for the Golden Zone. Now you have to know that anyplace referred to as the “Golden Zone” has got to be a fun place to visit.
We walked down to the Malècon and started out on a 4.5 mile walk...

Scottie...I need more power!!
So last night we had a “brown out” or power surge or whatever it’s called. Basically the electrical power drops below 100 volts which means anything that requires more than 100 volts doesn’t work. So the light bulbs worked but the all important AIR CONDITIONER did not. This made for a long and hot night. The power finally came back on full strength around 3AM.
What would...
El Mercado, The Market, El Supermercado
So today was recover from the bus ride, get the lay of the land and of course go grocery shopping day. We hit a restaurant on the beach called Cueva de Leon (complete with a lion mascot) for breakfast. Our next stop was the market or (el mercado). Now you think that with a map in hand, it would be fairly easy to find the market? NO! Not at all. So we get to where we think is a block away and are...

If it's good enough for Longfellow...
Today’s destination was the topic of the last poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow….That’s correct The Bells of San Blas. He rushed to finish this poem as he lay ill and dying. Fortunately he completed the poem 9 days before his death. I’m sure you have it memorized.
We arrived in San Blas after a 3.5 hour bus ride from Puerto Vallarta. The ride itself was uneventful...

Sayulita
Today’s trip was to a “fishing village” 35 mins north of Puerto Vallarta. Sayulita at some point WAS a fishing village but today it’s pretty close to Heaven.
Another bus ride (this one uneventful) delivered us to the center of town. A short walk down a muddy road dumped us at the beach. Nothing short of amazing. The water was filled with surfers as this fishing village...
Bucerias - "place of divers"
After the adventure of the bus ride to Bucerias, we decided that a nice lunch and a few drinks were in order. Grilled mahi-mahi tacos, shrimp tacos, chips & salsa, 2 margaritas and 2 mojitos later, we once again felt human. Did I mention that lunch was on the beach with our toes in the sand with only the ocean in view?! It was like a Corona commercial! (pics to follow) Later we walked around...

Is this my bus stop?
Today we decided to take the bus (super convenient) to Bucerias. This is a small beach town just north of Puerta Vallarta. After a little debate, we took the local bus 12 pesos = 1 dollar for 2 people to the “big bus stop.” From there we caught the inter-city bus to Bucerias among other points north. While the bus stops are labeled with a picture of a bus, they are not labeled with the...

Not in Kansas anymore!
Having intentionally avoided the all inclusive hotels and hotels AND basically renting an apartment, I must say this vacation definitely has a different feel. It’s like we have moved to another city. We make breakfast, lunch and dinner just like at home but as soon as we step out the door…you realize that you are quite far from home. Grocery shopping with the locals and hitting the...
